Scary PR: Social media tidal wave

Social media can feel overwhelming and downright scary at times. After all, everything you say and do on the World Wide Web can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. So, cross those Ts, dot those Is and read on to learn the basics of how to best present your business on social media.

Which platforms are best for me?

Well, it depends. Consider the nature of your business, its goals and your audience when exploring which social platforms to use. If you fall into the B2C sector, a robust social media presence is usually appropriate. Facebook and Instagram are great for most, but it’s important to consider LinkedIn and TikTok, as well. If you’re marketing directly to other businesses, you can likely take a much lighter approach. LinkedIn may be the only platform for you, for example, as it’s a great place to connect with other business owners, as well as prospective customers and employees.

What should I say?

Be strategic with your words and imagery. Don’t flood your feed with meaningless content for the sake of posting. Take time to craft messages your audience will find valuable and ones that will benefit your business and its goals. Are you a restaurant owner with a new cocktail special? Let your followers know! An event organizer looking to sell tickets? Shout your event details from the social media rooftops. And, while it’s important to take a stand for causes you care about, try to steer clear of controversial topics, especially those related to politics, to avoid alienating customers.

How often should I post?

Post frequency will be dictated by the platforms you’re using, your audience and your goals, so it’s hard to say. It’s most important to share strategic content with followers. Once you establish a presence, take note of how posts perform and go from there. Are you receiving great engagement? Up your postings and see if your stats remain impressive. No matter what, avoid posting too much, as doing so can fatigue your audience. This is an easy way to lose existing followers and deter those who stumble upon your page from hitting that follow button.

Clearly, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for social media. It truly varies business to business and can be a bit tricky, which is why calling on the professionals is crucial. Reach out to learn more about how the Obsidian team can help.
