Five tips to shape your story

With the amount of breaking news alerts we receive daily on our phones, it can be difficult for your story to push through the cracks. Whether it’s local media or national news, working with your comms team to engagingly craft your story can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you develop story ideas that are more likely to land and keep momentum going post-publication.

Narrow your focus to one concise story

Keeping your story concise and engaging is the most essential part of the media relations process. Instead of including too many details or making your story more elaborate by adding unnecessary ideas, focus on one key takeaway you’d like readers or viewers to walk away with if your story were to run. You should always put yourself in the shoes of the reader and ask yourself, “What was the main idea?” As leaders, you know the breadth of what’s going on and may want to pitch an all-encompassing piece. There could be a place for each element, but it’s not likely all in the same story!

Personalize your story

Each media outlet is different, and it is important to remember that when shaping your story. Instead of sending your story to all available media outlets and praying for the best results, trust your team’s recommendation on a one-outlet, one-story approach. It’s best to focus on the outlet that is most aligned with your announcement, event or piece and let them carry the story to fruition.

Ensure your story is ready for an immediate interview

If you want coverage, make sure you’re available when a reporter or media outlet is ready to ask for more information or schedule an interview. Especially if your story is breaking news, you should be prepared to serve as the spokesperson, ready to answer any questions and provide more details. If you’re not the spokesperson, but the story is important to you, make sure you’re equipping your team with the time and training they need to work with a reporter.

Following up

Now is the hard part, the waiting. Understand that it takes time for stories to land in the media, and many different factors can contribute to the placement of a story. Be patient and know that it is all part of the process when it comes to strategic public relations.

Post-publication

Once you have landed your story, celebrate your win! It’s always exciting to see your story rise to the top; however, do not stop there. Be sure to share the link on social media pages, like your LinkedIn, and link the piece in upcoming newsletters and blogs for all-around coverage, as landing the story is just step one.

Overall, thinking through the many ways to tell your business’s stories can be daunting; however, remembering these tips can help you achieve more success!
