Pro tip: Treat your brand like your baby

Bringing a new life into the world was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had. It created a new burst of joy in my heart, but it also came with an inherent, tangible responsibility that smacked me dead in my face (a good smack). That same level of pressure to rise to the occasion and bring your “A” game – every single day – is the same mindset a company should adopt when it comes to its brand.

An organization’s brand is what defines it.

It’s what makes it stand out from the rest.

It’s what leaves a lasting impression on others.

You must treat your brand with the utmost respect for it to develop, grow and prosper. Sounds like raising a child, yes? Here are a few ways to nurture your beloved brand.

Handle it with care.

Think of your brand as a delicate flower. It needs proper nutrients, water and sunlight to grow. It also needs to be handled with gentle care to allow it to bloom into its full potential. Such is also the case for your company’s brand. It’s important to be thoughtful with how you embody your brand. What do you want your company’s brand to say about your mission or values? How do you want that brand to make people feel? As you navigate these questions, take care to pour into your brand what you hope to flow out.

Practice what you preach.

If you say that your organization believes in X or stands for Y, it must do so – consistently! As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. For example, if your goal as a decision-maker is to make sure all employees feel valued, double-check the company’s compensation model. Make sure that you’ve carved out space for professional development and growth opportunities. Regularly seek feedback from employees to ensure they’re being heard. By doing so, your company not only says it cares, it shows it as well.

Be patient.

If raising a child has taught me anything, it is that patience truly is a virtue. As you work to build and mold your brand, you must manage expectations around timing. Great things (and little humans) take time to manifest. It’s important to take it slow but be steady. Every day is another opportunity to build upon the big-picture vision for your brand. Stay the course and remember that you’re in it for the long haul.
