What advice would you give to others that want to land an internship somewhere like Obsidian?

T: Any student can land an internship with an awesome firm like Obsidian by taking advantages of the opportunities that are presented to them, such as participating in university organization and events.

J: If you want to do something, a good place to start is to just ask.

How would you describe the difference between a level 1 and a level 2 intern?

T: The responsibilities of a level 1 intern are limitless. From pulling company reviews off of different websites to assisting in creating social media content for a client, work is unpredictable and exciting.

J: As a level 2 intern, I am here everyday and get to work on more ongoing projects.

What have you learned from your time here at Obsidian?

T: As I reflect on the past two months of my internship, the most important thing that I have learned is the significance of scheduling. The public relations professionals that I get to work with are detail-oriented and take calendars very seriously.

J: I have learned that to make the most of your internship, you should go along anytime you are invited to something. That experience is valuable and usually pretty fun, too.

Do you have a favorite client?

T: I’m eager to jump on any assignment for Sue Layman Designs. Her pieces are bold and unforgettable. Warning: You may be vulnerable to long periods of gazing!

J: My favorite clients to work for have been Maria Montessori School and the Memphis Zoo. I love kids and animals, and I’ve been able to see how both of those clients have been so important to Memphis over the years.

Do you have a final internship tip to share?

T: Make the most of your internship by continuously asking questions. Being an intern means that you are here to improve your skill set and become a more marketable applicant. Think of your internship as a SWOT analysis. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Create and take advantage of all opportunities. Acknowledge and eliminate your threats.

J: The biggest tip I have for other interns is to make sure your to-do list is accurate and detailed so that you’re not forgetting assignments.
