Intern Spotlight: Brittany Mizell
As part of our ongoing internship spotlight series, we’re connecting with interns of the past to relive their experiences and see what they’re up to! This month, we’re spotlighting Brittany Mizell, who you may have worked with in the past! Brittany started with Obsidian as an intern and transitioned into a full-time role after her internship term. Since then, she moved to Atlanta and built a flourishing PR career! She shared her Obsidian history with us – and how it has contributed to her current professional success.
Tell us about your current role and what you enjoy about your work.
I’m currently the senior coordinator of public relations at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. Each and every day brings forth new and exciting opportunities with local and national media that allow me to grow as a professional. From sharing news about leading artists in the High’s seven collecting departments to working with artists or collectors like Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, my job continuously provides me the chance to communicate the meaningful work being done in the art world and at our institution.
Do you use PR skills in your everyday job?
Absolutely. Writing is incredibly important in what I do, as it is with all public relations professionals. There’s a fine art to crafting verbiage that marries the meaning of impactful exhibitions or works with a message that resonates with our audiences.
How did your internship at Obsidian help prepare you for work you do today?
In college, we’re all taught how important writing is to what we do, but the staff at Obsidian helped me understand how wordsmithing truly is a craft that can move mountains. A majority of the work I do revolves around the humanities and societal topics, and trying to explain the multifaceted meanings of artworks or exhibitions through my work wouldn’t be possible without the foundation I built at Obsidian.
Is there a particular memory you have from your internship that was either fun or impactful?
I remember crafting written materials, particularly blog content, for HopeWorks as an intern and being inspired by their mission. Their work with holistic reentry is vital, and I’m happy to have had a chance to contribute to it.
Here is a memory from Lauren on our team! Everyone has heard the saying, “When you know, you know.” We are lucky to have had and still have many team members who fit that bill, and Brittney was definitely one of them. I think Brittney was destined to be a PR professional, as her skills stood out the first day she walked through our door. Not only was Brittney an excellent professional, from intern to full-time team member, but she was also kind, caring and a wonderful friend.
