Get to know Brittany!
We make a big deal of milestones at Obsidian. And they say time flies when you’re having fun! Jan. 1 marks Brittany Mizell’s first year with the firm, and it certainly has been a whirlwind. Though unconditional, Brittany has merged into our team with eager and attentive effort. That’s a recipe for success!
In the 12 months that she’s been with us full time, Brittany has garnered experience in a broad range of client industries. Unsurprisingly, her personal interests are equally as varied. Get to know a little more about Brittany in this month’s staff spotlight.
What’s the biggest lesson you learned personally and professionally in 2020?
Personally, I’ve learned that it’s OK to slow down sometimes. Although this was a lesson forced upon many of us during the pandemic, I think it’s a great one to learn nonetheless!
Professionally, I’ve learned that mistakes are great opportunities to learn. While I know that sounds pretty cliché, I didn’t fully comprehend it until I entered the workforce. Thankfully, I’ve had an incredible team to help me learn even more about myself and our field.
What’s one thing you’ve missed the most during the pandemic? What’s one thing that has secretly been kind of nice?
CONCERTS, I MISS YOU! Yes, being close to people while jumping to the music and getting hair in your mouth every two seconds can be obnoxious in the moment, but BOY do I miss those moments now. Don’t take them for granted!
As an extreme introvert, it has secretly been kind of nice to pass on outings because of the pandemic. Some days you just want to stay in your bed, you know?
Music or movies?
Music. All day long.
What’s your favorite PR tactic to execute?
This year, I’ve found a lot of joy in crafting videos for social media. I don’t get to do it often, but it’s something that I enjoy learning more about.
Has your perspective on PR changed since entering the workforce? Why or why not?
Before joining the workforce, I underestimated the amount of things we can actually do with our work. There’s so much more to it than just social media and strategy. While in school, we were so focused on writing – which is a large part of what we do – that I didn’t realize that there are a million other facets to our jobs.
What’s your favorite holiday tradition?
Christmas morning breakfast at my grandparents’ house with the family has to be my favorite. Sometimes, we’ll mix it up and get Chick-n-Minis from Chick-fil-A!
Are you planning to make any professional resolutions for 2021?
Of course! I’d like to take a deeper dive into media relations to improve my pitching skills and media relationships across all of my clients’ markets.
